The upside down canoe

I'll try this again, somehow it didn't post the first time. Tim was one of three Big brothers of mine, all of whom are gone now with his passing. For me, Tim carried the title of "Big Brother" as it was meant to be. He was 9 years my senior and from the time I was about 12 years old he would take me places and do things with me. Mainly he would take me fishing with him and teach me how to have fun fishing. Very often we would go to Lake Michigan and fish for Coho, Brown Trout and Smelt also. I loved those times, my big brother took the time to take me fishing with him and gave me something that would last a lifetime! I continued to love fishing my entire life thanks to my big brother! One trip in particular stands out above the rest, I even mentioned to Tim when he was up here recently and we laughed about it again. It was a weekend trip that he took me on to Brookville Lake in southern Indiana. We went down on Friday afternoon and set up camp and were ready for a weekend of fun. Saturday morning bright and early we are ready to go. Before we set out in the canoe Tim reminds me of the most important rule of the day; when you have to pee let the other guy know before you stand up so he can steady the canoe! Okay I got it. So we fish the morning away without much luck and great peeing success! We go to shore for lunch and a break before heading out again in the afternoon. The afternoon did not bring any fishing luck to speak of. So with the lack of fishing luck and the time in the canoeing mind starts to wander. I'm about 14 yrs. Old and Tim 23. So without thinking and having to pee really bad I just stood up to go. Tim had no chance to steady the canoe and we instantly flipped over! The canoe is complete upside down and we are in the water. It"s springtime and we are both wearing boots and heavy lined windbreakers. We immediately head for shore about 200 feet away. We made it to shore without regard for the canoe, that was some tough swimming. Once on shore Tim looked at me and asked "what happened to I gotta pee!" I gave my standard 14 yr. Old answer " I don't know" Then he said ," guess who's going to get the canoe" I knew the answer to that! So I took off my jacket and boots and headed out. I managed to right the canoe and toss everything that was floating back into it, grabbed the rope on the front and towed it back to shore. We got back in and rowed to our campsite not far from there. We started a fire dried out changed clothes and took inventory of the canoe. Amazingly everything was accounted for except for one brand new fishing lure that Tim had out of his tackle box and was getting ready to use." If that's all we lost were lucky" Tim said. That made me feel good after all that drama. So we went into town and dinner at a restaurant and came back and went to sleep. Sunday morning bright and early Tim decides we should take a ride to the south end of the lake. Brookville is a very large lake and we take about a 45 min. ride to get where were going. The sun is just rising as we put the canoe in and its a beautiful day. The first couple of hours of fishing was great! We are catching bluegill and crappie like crazy. Lots of them and they good eating size. As we continue to have great fishing success Tim sees something floating in the water and heading toward us. He says to me " what is that?" it's rather small and I can't tell what it is so I give my standard answer " I don't know". A few minutes go by and Tim says "grab your oar lets see what that is" so we paddle toward the object and suddenly Tim breaks out in laughter and says " I don't believe it! Its my lure!". No kidding there was the lure that slipped away when the canoe flipped. We are a long way from where that happened! Oh my, Tim's reaction was priceless. He was happy and so was I. We headed in after the fishing slowed down and cleaned our fish and had an amazing dinner at the campsite. Unforgettable! It was a time we both cherished forever. Every time I see a canoe I think of that trip. A trio that my big brother took me on and gave me a memory that lasts forever. So many of the best times of my life were spent fishing. I have my big brother Tim to thank for thatā¤ It never entered his mind that maybe it would be a hassle or a pain in the butt to take my little brother fishing with me, he did it because he wanted to. Because if your heart is in the right place that's the kind of thing you do for your little brother. I will miss my big brother a lot!! We were both looking forward to spending some more fishing times together in N.C. We talked about it every time we spoke. Two old codgers with their canes falling into the boat. We would have made it work somehow. I couldn't possibly have been blessed with a big brother that was any better Tim. God bless Tim and may he rest in peace. I love you Big Brother.
